President Infantino addresses G20 on tackling corruption in sport

Invited to speak on the fight against corruption in sport, President Infantino shared the lessons that the new FIFA has learned through its post-2016 reforms, as well as from the corruption scandal that brought down the previous administration.

Laying out the path taken by world football’s governing body in the first five years of his presidency, the FIFA President listed 11 key reforms designed “to tackle corruption, to bring back accountability in FIFA, in football more generally, and to safeguard the integrity of football and, of course, FIFA.”

Ghana climbs to 75th on latest global Corruption Perception Index

Ghana has improved her score on the latest Corruption Perception Index.

The 2020 report released by Transparency International saw the country score 43 points out of a possible 100, a two-point increase from 2019’s 41 points.

In the 2019 edition, Ghana was ranked 80th on the globe in terms of corruption perception and 10th in Sub-Saharan Africa.

However, the new figures show the country has climbed up to the 75th position in the world ranking while maintaining its 10th spot in Africa.

NCCE commended, advised to do more after it launched End-Line Survey on Corruption

Speakers at the launch of the End-Line Survey on Public Opinion on the State of Corruption, Public Accountability and Environmental Governance in Ghana conducted by the NCCE, commended the Commission for a good job done in producing the report.

Executive Director of the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), Linda Ofori-Kwafo, who reviewed the report praised the Commission for adopting an appropriate project management approach and for adopting a robust research methodology that covered 108 districts in all 16 regions of the country.

Stating that the fight against corruption was yielding some marginal results, Mrs. Ofori-Kwafo noted that the bit about whistle blowers not being safe is damning. She therefore called for more funding for NCCE and effective collaboration between the Commission and state institutions to do more to fight against corruption.

Registrar-General deploys Central Beneficial Ownership Register

The Register-General will be deploying a new Central Beneficial Ownership Register for all companies operating in the country.

According to Jemima Oware, this will end the lack of information about the ownership of businesses incorporated in the country which she described as creating a “dangerous and widening gap” in the country’s fight against corruption, money laundering, terrorism financing and other forms of financial crimes.

W.H.O. labels COVID-19 related graft as murder

All 54 countries on the continent have been affected by the highly infectious COVID 19, with over 1.1 million cases and and 27,000 deaths according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

There have been allegations of corruption scandals involving personal protective equipment in Africa such as in Zimbabwe, Kenya and South Africa.

Panama ex-president Martinelli facing corruption charges

Panama’s former president Ricardo Martinelli must face corruption charges just eight months after he was acquitted of spying on political foes, one of his lawyers said on Wednesday.

“They charged him,” his lawyer Ronier Ortiz told reporters outside the public prosecutor’s office in the capital Panama City.

Nigerian Financial Crime Office To Go After Looters Assets In Ghana, Other African Countries

The acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) Ibrahim Magu, has revealed that looters now hide stolen assets in Ghana and other African countries and the commission will go after them.

Magu, who stated this in Abuja where he was inducted into the 2020 hall of fame by the Governing Council of the Chartered Institute of Public Resources Management And Politics (Ghana), said the EFCC is on the verge of signing an agreement with these countries that will allow the commission trace and recover stolen assets directly from these countries.

World Must Continue To Fight The Invisible Infection Of Corruption—C’Wealth Secretary-General

Countries’ response to COVID-19, their long-term development, and the meeting of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are all threatened by the “invisible infection” of corruption, the Commonwealth Secretary-General has warned.
