Ghana scores average mark on 2020 Corruption Perceptions Index

Ghana has scored an average mark of 43 out of 100 on the 2020 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) released by Transparency International.

This left the country being ranked 75 out of 180 nations captured in the 2020 index.

The CPI draws upon 13 data sources which capture the assessment of experts and business executives on a number of corrupt behaviours in the public sector.

Would the Special Prosecutor please keep us updated on the corruption fight?

In my humble opinion, it was a step in the right direction when somewhere last year, the NPP Communication Director, the Honourable Yaw Buaben Asamoah called on the Special Prosecutor, Mr Martin Amidu to keep Ghanaians updated on the progress of the corruption fight.

Dearest reader, you may agree to disagree, but I am of the opinion that the appointment of Mr Martin Amidu to the position of the Special Prosecutor with a mandate of investigating, prosecuting and retrieving stolen monies from greedy and corrupt public officials, is, arguably, the most important appointment by President Akufo-Addo thus far.

Registrar-General deploys Central Beneficial Ownership Register

The Register-General will be deploying a new Central Beneficial Ownership Register for all companies operating in the country.

According to Jemima Oware, this will end the lack of information about the ownership of businesses incorporated in the country which she described as creating a “dangerous and widening gap” in the country’s fight against corruption, money laundering, terrorism financing and other forms of financial crimes.

Residents in local communities have been encouraged to own developmental projects and policies ongoing in their communities in order to seek for accountability from duty bearers.

We don’t need new structures to fight corruption – Bright Sewu

The Head of Programmes and Deputy Executive Secretary of the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition(GACC) has said that Ghana does not need new structures to fight corruption.

Bright Sewu said the country already has enough structures to fight the canker, however, these structures must be managed by leaders who can guarantee the independence of institutions mandated to fight corruption.

South African president refers information bill to parliament

President Cyril Ramaphosa has requested the parliament to reconsider the Protection of State Information Bill (PSIB) based on reservations about its constitutional validity, his office said on Friday.

The president has, in writing, drawn the attention of National Assembly Speaker Thandi Modise to constitutional reservations emanating from the bill which has been referred to the president for assent and signing into law, Ramaphosa’s spokesperson Khusela Diko said.

The RTI Law: A tool to combat corruption or otherwise?

Over the years, journalists, civil society and anti-corruption advocates have campaigned for passage of the Right to Information (RTI) bill, and argued that nonexistence of the law prohibits people from knowing what is happening in public institutions – hence breeding corruption.

Even though the right to information is a basic right enshrined in the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, it took decades for the country to promulgate the RTI to provide a legal framework for implementation of the constitutional right to access information from public institutions.
